The Austin Environmental Council, the city's first home-grown environmental organization is formed. Its founders were dissatisfied with the City's lack of initiative to protect Austin's natural heritage.

It was obvious that all sorts of developments...were about to be created along the creek and we felt that both the city and the individual landowners and developers simply had to be made to stop and think before they spoiled something which could never be replaced.
